Music: An Invention Vs a Discovery (Part 4)

Hey guys,

Two things before I begin.... First, I deleted the former M Pire Magazine Twitter account and created a new one, so take a second to simply press the "follow" button on the right of the page where our twitter post is. I will be honest, we really do need to work our numbers back up. Second thing is, since a lot of my posts have been about music (such as this one), in the future I'm going to be doing posts and having guest bloggers post about other art realms that we cater too, such as visual art, fashion, comedy, literature, etc. So stick with us!

Anyways, as a continuation of a series of posts I've been doing about whether Music is an Invention vs a Discovery (for those who are new to this, I did an essay on this topic, and I've been sharing bits and pieces of it in my posts for people to read and comment on), this segment of my essay was by far my most favorite, and I feel like the world needs to put in some more research on this particular subject, more classes need to be done on it, and more books need to be written about it.

One of the most important reasons why music plays such an important role in our lives is because of how respond to it on a mental and spiritual level. We talk about how sound waves hit our ears, but what happens between the time we hear the sound and the time we respond to that sound? To address this, I pasted a part of my essay that looks into the relationship between music and the human brain. Just thinking about that subject sends chills down my spine. But enough blabbering, here's this part of my essay. Again this is an essay, and the info was pulled from another resource, so you can put down the tomatoes and knives. Enjoy the read!

'One important factor that solidifies built-in musical development is the natural relationship between music and the human brain. We as humans have components already built in our brains, such as the temporal lobe, which is connected with memory and hearing. The book “This is Your Brain On Music” explains how processing music involves almost every part of our brain, from hearing to memory to emotion to physical response, “Different aspects of music are handled by different neural regions – the brain uses functional segregation for music processing, and employs a system of feature detectors whose job is to analyze specific aspects of the musical signal, such as pitch, tempo, timbre, and so on,” (Levitin, Daniel J, pg 86). The book continues to go into detail on what happens between the time music is heard and the time we respond to the music.  When one listens to a song, the hippocampus, which deals with memory, activates to help you remember the song. Tapping to music activates the cerebellum, which deals with emotions and operating body movements. The book talks about other examples of mental response to music, but one particularly important example deals with our emotional response to music. The book explains how the cerebellum becomes involved in this process, “At a deeper level, the emotions we experience in response to music involve structures deep within the primitive, reptilian regions of the cerebellar vermis, and the amyglada – the heart of emotional processing in the cortex,” (Levitin, Daniel J, pg 87). Even when it comes to general sound, the brain can process the difference between sounds and what they mean, “Some sounds are instinctually soothing while others are frightening. Although there is a great deal of interpersonal variation, we are born with a predisposition toward interpreting sounds in particular ways. Abrupt, short, loud sounds tend to be interpreted by many animals as an alert sound…Slow, onset, long, and quieter sounds tend to be interpreted as calming, or at least neutral,” (Levitin, Daniel J, pg 92).'

I have to look back in my essay to see if I missed any other important segments, but as far as I know, this may be it. Meanwhile, If you haven't checked out our super-cool (and free) interactive digital issue of the newest M Pire Magazine issue, feel free to click below!

M Pire Magazine is Not Just for Music Artists....

Hey Creators,

I had to create this post because I started seeing a one-sided pattern (for which I'm completely at fault) that our magazine started building a very large fan base of music artists, musicians, DJ's, producers, etc. Which is great! The theme of our magazine, as some of you may know, is about building your M Pire. That means anyone in any realm of the arts. Unfortunately, there have been some realms of the "arts" that have been underrepresented in the past few issues, so I'm working to change that for this coming August issue.

For those who are hearing about us for the first time, in a nutshell, M Pire Magazine (Click to go to website) is a magazine that helps promote artists of all types. And this is our blog :-) We've had some authors and actors promote in our magazine here and there, but we want to try to balance the presence of each "art" world in our magazine. So, to clear things up, I want to provide a list of other realms of art that we cater to:

1. Visual arts (painting, sculpting, digital art, etc)
2. Comedy
3. Fashion Industry
4. Film Industry
5. Literature (including book writing, poetry/spoken word, etc)
6. Whatever I forgot goes here...

We understand how hard it is to make a career from scratch out of many of these industries, so that's why we're here... to help get you out there. But I can show you better than I can tell you. Check out our (free) interactive digital issue below, featuring El DeBarge Jr on the cover (whom we'll be interviewing next week). And we're so cool, we even placed a youtube video on page 5 (yes, a video in a magazine). Check it out!

Live Interview Next Week w/El DeBarge Jr

Hey everyone,

I still have to update the M Pire site to prepare for next week's LIVE Podcast interview with our latest magazine feature, El DeBarge Jr. So you won't have to go to our main site, I've provided the stream below so you can listen live right on this blog!

What you're looking at right now is a recording of our last interview with artist T.Y., which will be up there until we do the next interview. Feel free to give it a listen! I also apologize for the music glitch. I know nothing was playing when I said it was. That was me still trying to figure out the DJ console system :-\ I'll get it right the next time!

The interview with El DeBarge Jr will be Thursday, May 30th, 2013 at 8pm EST and 5pm PST.

Also, be on the look out for when I open the opportunity for any of you artists reading to be considered for an interview, yourselves. My interview schedule for June has been thrown up in the air so once that's settled I'll let you guys know when I can take interviews! In the meantime, check back in next Thursday for this one and feel free to read our latest, free, mobile-friendly, interactive, digital magazine issue below. It's got really good artists in there as well as two articles that give you tips on how to make it in the music industry!

Take Over NYC with M Pire!

Hello again guys,

Before I begin I want all of you to do me a big favor...... take a couple seconds and like M Pire's facebook page by clicking here: https://www.facebook.com/MPireMagazine. It will open in a new window so you won't lose this page. Thanks a bunch :-D

Anyway, I wanted to give you guys an update on what's going on in the coming months. I'm not sure if I mentioned this in one of my previous blogs. I know I mentioned how we put upcoming events on our website, but for this coming issue (August), we're taking it a few steps further for all of you...

If you are in the NYC/NJ/PA area, are a comedian, music artist, or spoken word artist working to create a name for yourself and looking for opportunities to perform, you might want to tune in to this one. This summer, we're getting up close with all the open mics and showcases in NYC. We'll be video interviewing the promoters, getting footage of their events, taking photos, etc, and placing all of that in the August issue (for those who didn't read my last blog, our digital issue is "interactive", where you would be able to watch these videos, look at the photo gallery, listen to music files, etc, right inside the magazine itself). We'll also be getting their schedule of events to put on the website before the August issue comes out, so you don't have to wait for the issue to go to these events yourself.

As we grow, we will be doing this in other major cities across the country, so stay tuned for that one. We also have some other ideas we're exploring to help advance your career and build your M Pire. In the meantime, feel free to read the digital issue below. This one's got some good articles on how to make it in the music industry. Until next time!

El DeBarge Jr on our Latest Issue (Free Digital Copy)

Hello Everyone,

I'm proud to announce that our May 2013 issue of M Pire Magazine is here! I must say this one was quite an adventure that will open many doors, especially in the August issue! For one, this one features El DeBarge Jr, whom yours truly will be interviewing in June (I'll keep you updated on that one, but make sure you subscribe to our mailing list at www.m-piremagazine.com to make sure you be the first to find out!). More info below the image...

This issue also contains two very useful articles on how to make it in the music industry. One is a continued interview from February's issue with high-profile studio engineer Montez Roberts, and there is a new one called "DIY Artist Promotion - The New Normal" by Camille Barbone that gives you the scoop on how to promote your own music. Pretty meaty stuff.

The other thing that's REALLY cool is about the free digital, mobile-friendly issue of M Pire (there is a print version available as well here: http://www.magcloud.com/browse/issue/564002?__r=297175). The digital copy will have all kinds of interactive features inside of it, such as listening to music, videos, animation, etc, right in the magazine! Again, all of this can be accessed through your computer and through your mobile device. Give it a try..... Our May issue has something pretty cool on page 5. Just Click Here! Make sure you subscribe (free) so you can be notified of future issues and access past issues, and you can also download a PDF of the magazine so you can access it offline.

If you have guys want to reach out to me about being in the August issue, feel free to shoot me an email at awebb@m-piremagazine.com. Talk to you soon!

Who is M Pire Magazine Anyway?

Hello everyone...

I apologize for not blogging for a while. A lot has been going on. I wanted to inform you guys that I have changed the title and theme of this blog to the building of M Pire Magazine, which is a new magazine that focuses on promoting artists of all spectrums. That includes music, art, film, literature, comedy, theatre, dance, etc.

I wanted to talk a little on how this magazine came about. As an upcoming artist myself who was trying to make it, I quickly discovered all the difficulties of trying to build a name for myself without the help of a record label. It takes time, dedication, and patience, and becoming a well-known artist is definitely not just a part-time job! However, the tools to build an independent artist career are very limited. But you all know this already.

SO.... I figured, why not change that?

Sure, we can revert to social networks like MySpace and reverbnation to promote our music. The good news about that is, everyone can get on these sites. The bad news about that is...... well..... everyone can get on these sites. My problem with these social networks is that the few artists who are very serious about their work get lost in a sea of millions of other artists who are doing music for fun.... which isn't a bad thing.... but there needs to be a place strictly for artists who want to make their music their lifestyle.

I figured artist promotion in the form of a magazine would work because, number one, mags present ad space. And the magazines that exist now cover mostly mainstream artists, and no beginning artist has $10,000-100,000 to buy a 1/32 page black-and-white ad at the bottom corner of one issue (I know I didn't). The core importance of M Pire Magazine is that it's completely affordable for artists who wish to invest in their music. The other core importance of M Pire is that whoever we advertise makes their fans our fans, and our fans become new fans for our incoming featured artists, and their fans also become our fans, who become fans of past and more upcoming features in our mag, and so on. So everyone's name builds up this way. Pretty cool, right?

Here are some other important factors about M Pire Magazine that will deem very useful for our artists and readers:

  1. We also offer ad space for music-based businesses such as production companies, management, record labels, studios, publishers, etc. This brings business to them as well as services that artists may need to build their career.
  2. We offer promotion for events in 10 major US cities around the country, including artist showcases, open mics, album release parties, etc. Artists who live in those areas can check out those events as an opportunity to promote their music.
  3. There are various sections in our magazine that appeal to artist and non-artist readers. For our artists, there's one important section called "M Pire Drops Gems", where we feature articles that touch on important topics and know-hows in the music and entertainment industry. Our february issue (below) has an article by studio engineer Montez Roberts on how to make it in the music business. He's a high-profile engineer who has worked with Jill Scott, Marsha Ambrosius, The Legendary Roots, just to name a few. For our non-artists, we have sections that can apply to your everyday lifestyle, such as "M Pire on Love", "M Pire on Money", and "M Pire on Health". This past issue, we did an "Editor's Choice" on natural hair care products.
  4. We offer ad space and services to other forms of art as stated above, such as those in the film business, authors and writers, producers, comedians, DJ's, etc etc.
I think this about sums up who we are and what we're about. With all this said, I would encourage you all to treat yourself to a free (again.....FREE) eCopy of our February issue below, which you can read from your computer, mobile device, etc. The print copy is about $5 if you want to buy one but that's optional. Also, we are releasing the May 15th issue soon, so feel free to join our mailing list at www.m-piremagazine.com to stay updated on that as well as upcoming events!
