Good Reference for Those in the Music Industry

I don't know why this one went over my head, but I really want to put you guys on to this book that really breaks down how the music industry works. It's my personal favorite, and for those of you who have already read it, feel free to comment your review/opinion on this book. It's called All You Need to Know About the Music Business by Donald Passman, who we've actually reached out to for the November 2013 issue. We'll keep you posted on the progress with that. Anyway, this book breaks down everything from distribution of royalties, to how record labels really work, to the roles of managers, PR agents and A&R Reps, lawyers, publishers, etc. It also breaks down how to get your music registered for copyright, registered under a PRO (Performing Rights Organization), all that stuff.

Picking a Theme for November 2013

As a lot of you may know, we chose to center our attention around the music and poetry open mics of NYC in our recent August issue. Now, for the November issue, we plan to feature Pharoahe Monch for the front cover, however we still would like to keep this theme thing going for a minute. As I stated in one of my last posts, we want to make sure that all art forms are well represented in our magazine issues, and there's one particular field that's been on my mind for a while:

Comedy

Now we all love to laugh and make others laugh, so I figured Comedy would be a great focus for our upcoming issue. The theme is still tentative at this early stage and may change, but I'm already in the works of researching various comedy clubs in NYC as well as featuring well-known comedians, and reaching out to them all in the same up-close fashion that we did in our last issue. This would be great for those of you in the area who are looking for opportunities to perform your acts. Also, if any of you know of any great comedy clubs we can reach out to (they can be anywhere), or would yourself like to have your act featured in the magazine, feel free to contact me at awebb@m-piremagazine.com

Exclusive Open Mic Interviews

In case you guys didn't notice, inside the magazine are two exclusive video interviews we did regarding a couple of well-known open mics in NYC. I embedded both youtube videos below so you can see for yourself. The first one is an interview of one of the promoters for an open mic called End of the Weak. Now I posted the preview interview a few weeks ago, but this is the full video. End of the Weak (a.k.a EOW, or Eodub) is actually a hip hop open mic that runs worldwide and has been around for over 12 years. In NYC, it happens every sunday at Pyramid Nightclub (more information at www.eodub.com). The second video is an interview with hosts Gaston and WiseGuy, who host two open mics ("ALL THAT! Hip Hop, Poetry & Jazz" and "WORDS"). Both open mics happen at Nuyorican Cafe in NYC (more info at http://www.m-piremagazine.com/Pages/Events.html). Enjoy the videos!

The (Free) August 2013 Issue of M Pire Magazine is Here!

I'm proud to announce that the 2013 August issue of M Pire Magazine has arrived. This issue covers events and reps of fashion, music, poetry, business, and more...

First, to clear the air, you're probably wondering what's up with the weird format of the cover. We decided to do something a little different and add an animated microphone to the cover to honor our featured open mics in the NYC area (after all, they are the theme of this issue). You can click the "play" button on the cover to watch the microphone move.

Aside from the seven different open mics featured in this issue, we have exclusive interviews with Landon Brown (Bobby Brown's son) and business owner Mecca Bey, as well as features with business blogger Penelope Trunk, fashion blogger Kiersten Heath, a music review of This Years Love UK (yes we do reviews as well), a continued article from Camille Barbone, and other useful content. You will also notice that we made this issue more "interactive" by adding more youtube videos, photo galleries, music tracks, links, etc, so you guys won't be scavenger hunting through the web to find out more about our features.

Don't forget to subscribe to our free issues on the form at the bottom of the second page. No registration needed. Just an email. You will be automatically notified when the next issue comes out (November 2013). Enjoy!

Submit Your Event To M Pire For Free Promotion

I meant to say this earlier, but if you have an event coming up between September and November 2013, whether it be a concert, open mic/showcase, comedy act, fashion show, book signing, art showcase, etc, please submit a JPG of the flyer to my email at awebb@m-piremagazine.com by August 10th, and we'll have it up on our site on our "events" page by August 15th for free.

Although we'll be posting events for a $25 fee after this free "quarter" (if it's an ongoing event, then it would be $25 for each quarter that we keep it up on our site), if you submit an event now or have already submitted an event to us in the past, you automatically get to post your flyers for future events for $15 each for the next year.

Until then, check out our latest issue of M Pire Magazine below:

M Pire Supports Causes, Non-Profit Orgs, and Our Military (for free)

One thing you may not know about M Pire Magazine is, even though our main focus is to create opportunities for artists of all types looking to build a career around their craft, we also feature others whose mission is to make the world a better place, which include non-profit organizations, causes, activist programs, individuals of the military, etc. In fact, we advertise them for free. So if you have an organization, or know someone who runs an organization such as the ones I listed, and are looking to push them, send me an email at awebb@m-piremagazine.com.

Anyway, one story we want to cover in this blog is an individual named Justin, a Pennsauken, NJ native who decided to join the US Marines at 17 years old...

We were able to attend and get photos from his recent going-away celebration, as he prepares to leave for recruit camp...

Aside from making the brave decision to serve our country and defend our freedom, he has devoted much of his time to help improve the neighborhood he lives in. Many people in the area know him for his contributions and a lot of the young teenagers admire him for his accomplishments. One notable deed includes forming a group of young teens in his town, meeting up with them, and doing workouts and runs with them to help promote the importance of fitness, well-being, and maintaining good priorities. One relative stated to M Pire Magazine, "They all look up to him as a leader, and he keeps them engaged in productive activities while encouraging them to set - and accomplish - their goals. As a family, we are all extremely proud of his accomplishments."

We will be having more of these great stories as our blog posts and magazine issues progress. In the meantime, check out our latest issue of M Pire Magazine below.

Preview: Interview for open mic "End Of The Weak"

So not only does M Pire now have a Youtube page, we have uploaded our FIRST VIDEO! I know you remember me talking about getting the scoop on some of the NYC open mics and showcases that are going on so the artists who live in the area can attend and promote their music. I took the extra step to pull the promoters themselves aside and interview them about their event. Here's a preview of one interview I did of promoter Nonezeo who runs End of the Weak, an international open mic series that has been running for well over a decade. The full interview will be released in the August issue. Don't forget to subscribe to our Youtube page, because we have more surprises coming!

Also don't forget to check out, if you already haven't our last issue featuring El DeBarge Jr!
